How to Rank No.1 in Google Search

Yes, this is a million dollar question and here we tell you how to do that without spending $1! Yes, it is possible! Note that this article tries to educate ecommerce store owners who use an ecommerce platform to sell their products (some of the aspects may be applicable to others too. So read on anyways!)

Some basics about Google search

Before we get into the details, the foremost thing you need to know about Google search is that  people who search for a particular product will use different terms/phrases (commonly referred to as ‘keywords’ or ‘key phrases’) to search the same product (much different than you would have thought!). We will get into the details about this little later.

Now next thing you need to know is how Google ranks the pages. There are several technical aspects related to it, which is usually taken care by the website designer or the ecommerce portal (such as that by Shopnix). The Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is one such aspect. Simply put, it involves placing the right keywords at the right places, right number of times. Let’s not get into the technicality any further!

Overall, Google (or any other search engine) makes an attempt to show the most relevant and most popular page for the search term used by a searcher. Apart from the technical aspect of getting your page to rank higher, lets now see how you can take some simple steps to increase your page ranking.

Steps to increase ranking

So here are a few aspects that you can control to help increase your page ranking. But remember one thing – nothing comes free! You have to put in some time to do this yourself!

Increase back links

Google ranks a page high if there are several other quality websites/blogs/forums (not fake or commercial ones) which display a link to your page. For example, there is a website/forum where cricket is being discussed and you sell cricket related equipments. If your products are unique (or you have all the best ones) then every time somebody on the website/forum asks about place to buy quality product, the website/forum members or owners will put up a link to your website or product page. More such links, higher is the ranking! So your aim is to get the maximum number of back links that lead back to your homepage or product page.

Write about your products

Writing is many a times one time investment. Articles (such as recipes, do it yourself tricks, etc) often need to be written only once. So, you can write about a product directly or anything related to it. For example if you are selling coffee powder, you can write articles related to aspects such as – how and where it grows, how is it processed, how is coffee made, how to make the best brew, etc. And, at the end of such articles, you can leave some details about where to get the best coffee powder (a link to your page).

The key to success with this is writing good articles that are:

  • Relevant
  • Simple to read
  • Authentic
  • Picturesque enough

You can write in your own blogs, submit a guest article in a blog, or answer related queries in forums. Social media such as Facebook,Google plus, Twitter, Pinterest, etc are also good places to showcase your products/articles. But make sure you have the right link (homepage or product page) included in the pictures or articles shared on social media.

List your website with webdirectories

This is one of the oldest methods, which still works! All you need to do is submit your url (webpage address, eg www.coorgshoppe.com) to these directories. There are several directories where you can list your website for free! Some of these include Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

With all these steps (especially about writing), one must however remember that it is a constant process (you need to update atleast once a week) to reach number one in Google rankings (and also to remain there for long/always). Nevertheless it is quite easy to do so!
